Erith : Erith lies just south of the Thames about four miles north-west of Dartford and probably derived its name from 'muddy or gravelly landing place'. The area has long been settled largely because a number of ancient trackways converged on the Thames at this particular point. In the 16th century Henry VIII built a naval dockyard here and in the 19th century it became a fashionable place to visit until the railways arrived bringing increasing suburbination.
