Dartford : Dartford has a long history and has always been an important centre for communications with Watling Street, the main route from London to Dover, running through the town. The Dartford Tunnel was opened in 1961. Its name derives from 'ford on the River Darent' and the town lies about two miles south of the River Thames.
At the time of Domesday Dartford was known as Tarenteford and had a mill, three churches and two harbours. In the Middle Ages several Religious orders established themselves to cater for the many pilgrims that passed through the town. Later the town became well known for the manufacture of paper.
