Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Wickford
Wickford is mentioned in Domesday as Wincfort and had three beehives, three cobs and two foals. Its name seems to come from 'ford by an earlier Romano-British settlement'. The town is about ten miles east of Junction 29 of the M25 and lies on the River Crouch with the River Wick flowing into the Crouch. Like many other towns in this part of Essex Wickford was a village before the 20th century but is now a busy centre with a mainline station.
