Stanway is about four miles west of Colchester and was mentioned in Domesday as Stanewega and belonged to the King with three mills, 260 sheep and 11 cobs. It was so named after the 'stone-way' used by the Romans en-route from Colchester. The Roman bricked Norman church of St Albright was a wayside chapel for pilgrims in the middle ages. Today the A12 bypass skirts the west of the town and the Tollgate Shopping Centre and the Co-Operative retail park are the major shopping amenities.
