Rochford is about two miles north of the popular seaside resort of Southend-on-Sea created in the early 19th century and which soon became one of the most popular holiday towns in the country. It is situated on the north bank of the Thames and from here there is a seafront walk all the way to Shoeburynes three miles to the east.
Two Tree island to the west is the site of a national nature reserve and Prittlwell Priory, founded in the 12th century, is now a museum surrounded by parkland to the north of the town centre. Southend has the longest pier in the world with a minature railway and is popular with fishermen. At low tide the sea goes out for more than a mile.
