Leigh-on-Sea is mentioned in Domseday as Legra and had four cows and five calves. It lies about four miles west of Southend-on-Sea on the Thames estuary. For many years it was a small fishing village and then expanded considerably in the 19th century as a resort eventually merging with its neighbour Westcliff-on-Sea. It is situated on the north bank of the Thames and from here there is a seafront walk all the way to Shoeburynes five miles to the east. Southend-on-Sea is a major residential and commercial town with numerous facilities and a seafront full of cafes, stalls and shops.
