Frinton-on-Sea was known as Frietuna in Domesday and its name probably derives from 'Fritha's farmstead' or 'protected farmstead'. It is a fashionable seaside resort with a long esplanade backing onto a grassy bank sloping down to the beach. There are golf clubs, tennis courts and sea fishing and beautiful walks behind the Naze overlooking Horsey Island. The town lies about five miles to the north-east of the larger centre of Clackton-on-Sea and has a good range of shops and amenities including a station.
