Grays Thurrock acquired the name 'Grays' from ownership of the manor of Thurrock by a family of that name in the 12th century. Thurrock itself is a Saxon name meaning 'the bottom of a ship'. Grays is about three miles east of the M25 and west of Tilbury on the north bank of the Thames. Here the Thurrock Yacht Club has a busy race calendar with several race evenings and on the foreshore of nearby Grays Beach is the lightship, The Gull, built in the mid 19th century.
Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service.
