Brightlingsea was known as Brictriceia in Domesday and had a mill, a church, cattle, cobs and sheep. The town is opposite Mersea Island and the River Colne flows to the sea past Colne Point to the east. The town was once famous for its oysters and in the Middle Ages was an important port and member of the Cinque Ports of Sandwich. The town has a magnificent parish church with many memorials to those who have died at sea.
