Basildon was mentioned in Domesday as Belesduna and originally belonged to Swein of Essex and lies about 30 miles east of London. It expanded considerably in the 20th century and was really a post war creation officially designated a 'New Town' in 1949. The town centre has many national high street shops and the covered Eastgate Shopping Centre has more than a 100 stores and the Westgate Shopping Centre is also a popular destination. The Festival Leisure Park north of Basildon has several restaurants, a bowling and arcade centre, cinema, health clubs and hotels. There is also a water-boarding venue in the town.
