Southwold was mentioned in Domesday and is on the Suffolk Heritage Coast and a popular tourist destination in the summer with a long sandy beach. In the 17th century many townspeople emigrated to America and helped set up one of the first colonies in Massachusetts. The Battle of Solebay was the first naval engagement of the Third Anglo-Dutch War also in the 17th century and took place close to Southwold. In the late afternoon the Dutch withdrew.
