Capel St Mary is about six mile south-west of Ipswich and has long been settled with Roman remains being found including cremation urns in the village churchyard. One of the first fortified houses in the country was built at nearby Little Wenham in the late 13th century.The village expanded considerably in the late 20th century and now has several shops including a bakery, hairdressers, supermarket, chemist, doctors surgery and post office.
