Bury St Edmunds is an old market town on the River Lark about 25 miles north-west of Ipswich. King Edmund of East Anglia was killed by the Danes in the 9th century and later canonized. A Benedictine abbey was founded nearby and later the Normans developed the town around it. Subsequently the the town became an important pilgrimage centre but little is now left of the abbey.
