Portishead is mentioned in Domesday as Porteshe and had a mill with sixty goats. It derived its name from 'headland by the harbour' and is set just to the west of the mouth of the River Avon. It remained a village for much of the middle ages and grew up around the church and the manor house, The Court. It didn't become a major centre until the building of the docks in the 19th century. Today it is a small resort with modern development and good shopping.
The cricket ground is in a park which slopes down to the breach where there are good views across the mouth of the River Severn to Denny Island and the Welsh coast near Newport.
Brunel Court is situated off Harbour Road to the east of the town centre.
