Minehead was known as Maneheue in Domesday and had a mill, 16 cattle and 300 sheep. Its name possibly derives from 'mountain' or projecting hill-spur'. Quay Town is the oldest part and has a harbour dating from the 17th century when the town was an important fishing port. Minehead later developed as a seaside resort with the coming of the railways and there are many holiday attractions with sandy beaches and places to see. To the south of the town on a dramatic hillside setting is Dunster Castle which has been an important fortress for over a thousand years now in the ownership of the National Trust.
