Clevedon derives its name from 'hill of the cliffs' and developed as a seaside resort in the mid-nineteenth century. Its famous pier was restored to its former glory after partly sinking under the waves. The town's promenade has remained unchanged and there are fine Victorian houses along the streets and several ornamental gardens. There are many fine restaurants, inns and tea rooms, craft shops, and supermarkets.
