Bruton was mentioned in Domesday as Briutona and belonged to the King. It is an attractive old town on the River Brue with a pack-horse bridge. Part of the 12th century abbey walls can be seen in Plox Street and a dovecote survives on a hill above the town. The grammar school dates from the 16th century and Sexey Hospital from the 17th century.
