March is mentioned as Mercha in Domesday and belonged to the Abbot of Eley. The village once stood on the River Nene but this was diverted to form a straight route from Peterborough to Wisbech. For many years the village remained little more than a hamlet and only expanded in the 19th century with the coming of the railways. The 15th century Church of St Wendreda is famous for its double hammerbeam roof carved angels.
