Ely was mentioned in Domesday and had fisheries and vines. It is a small cathedral city on high ground dominating the surrounding Fenland. The original monastery was built in the 7th century and then rebuilt in the 12th century as an abbey when the diocese of Ely was created. The famous octagonal tower designed by Alan de Walsingham was completed in 14th century. The Bishop's Place dates from the 15th century and there are several 17th and 18th century buildings nearby.
