Bassingbourn was mentioned in Domesday as Basingborne and belonged to the Bishop of Winchester and had four mills. It lies close to the Hertfordshire border near the Roman Ermine Street and two ancient trackways including the Icknield Way. Bassingbourn Barracks was originally an RAF station and is now a training centre for the Armed Forces. The village has several shops and a Doctors' surgery and a dental surgery.
Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service, lounge and laundry.
