The house was built by Charles Barry in 1851 and in the early 20th century was home to the Astors and became a magnate for high society. Politicians and the international jet set came here to enjoy the spectacular views and beautiful gardens. The estate is more than 300 acres.

Marlow is a bustling riverside town with an attractive wide high street leading down to its elegant suspension bridge renovated in the 1960's. At the southern end of the bridge is the Compleat Angler named after Izaak Walton's famous book on fishing. There are many attractive Georgian houses in the high street and good walks along the riverside below Marlow Lock and in Quarry Wood.
