Olney is an attractive small market town on the River Ouse It was mentioned in Domesday as Olnei and had one of the largest mills in the district. Its name derives from 'Olla's island or dry ground in a marsh'. The poet William Cowper lived and worked here at the invitation of the eccentric evangelist John Newton.
