Amersham is mentioned in Domesday as Elmodesham and had two mills partly owned by Thurstan Mantle whose name is commemorated in Mantles Green. Elmodesham House itself is a fine Georgian building and the town is very attractive with a wide high street and many 17th century buildings, Georgian Market Hall and almshouses. The Swan Inn was rebuilt in 1643. Nearby is Shardeloes Park designed by Robert Adam. Amersham-on-the-Hill is to be found to the north-west of the old town and has good local shopping and a mainline railway station.
