Kingsbridge grew up around a bridge in the 10th century between two royal estates and became a borough in the 13th century. It later absorbed the adjacent town of Dodbrooke and soon became the leading market town in the South Hams area. Today the town is a popular tourist destination and has a variety of shops, inns and restaurants. The South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty includes much of the South Hams area and coastline, including Prawle Point, the southernmost point in Devon.
