Crediton was mentioned in Domesday as Critetone and belonged to the Bishop of Exeter. It was the birthplace of St Boniface and previously the seat of the Devon bishopric which was moved to Exeter in the 11th century. It is an attractive mainly Georgian and Victorian town and overlooking the river is Downes - the country seat of the Redvers Buller family. Isambard Brunel designed the railway station.
