Braunton was mentioned in Domesday as Bracton and belonged to the King with 200 sheep. It is thought that its name derives from broom shrub meaning settlement and it is now a large village with a good number of shops and amenities. The South West Coast Path National Trail passes through the village as does the Tarka Trail. Braunton Great Field is thought to be an example of the Saxon open strip system and is a rare medieval landscape unlike other parts of rural Devon.
