Woolstanton is about a mile and a half northwest of Stafford on the old Roman Rykeneld Street from Chester to Derby where several Roman artefacts have been found. Stafford was mentioned in Domesday as Statford and was by far the largest town in the county at the time. The city is on the site of a hermitage built by St Bertelin and has many historic buildings including the High House, a four storied timbered building stayed in by Charles 1.
