Wolverhampton : Wolverhampton is an old settlement and its name is thought to come from 'Wulfrunishamtun' meaning the town of Wulfrun but in a 10th century royal charter it is referred to as 'Heantun'. In the churchyard of St Peters and near a holed Bargain Stone is an ancient carved cross shaft.
The town grew as a market centre for wool in the middle ages and became an important industrial centre if the 19th century specialising in steel, cars and mining. Engineering is still a major industry within the city. Bantock House has a museum of items made by local craftsmen and the Bilston Museum and Art Gallery has many examples of English enamels.
