Uttoxeter was mentioned in Domesday as Wotocheshede and belonged to the King. Its name is thought to derive from 'Wuttuc's homestead on the heath' and lies close to the River Dove. The town continues to have a Wednesday and Saturday market first granted in the early 14th century and is a popular tourist centre being close to the Peak District National Park. It is the birthplace of the philosopher Thonmas Allen and Samuel Johnson's father had a bookstall in the town. Uttoxeter racecourse is well known.
