Burton-upon-Trent originally grew up around its abbey and became a busy market town in the National Forest lying on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border. The town is best known for its brewing heritage due to the excellent quality of its water. The big percentage of dissolved salts allowed the brewers to put a greater number of hops in the brew which allowed the beer to be sent further afield and with the opening of the Trent Navigation system in the early 18th century Burton Beer was exported over much of the known world.
