Newcastle-under-Lyme is an old market town situated in a valley beside the Lyme Brook and grew up around the 'new' castle in the 12th century. It received its first charter from Henry II in the 12th century and during the middle ages had cotton mills and later a prominent hatting and pipe making industry. With the coming of the industrial revolution coal mining and brick manufacture came to the fore. Clothing remains an important part of the local economy in the 21st century.
