Cannock was mentioned in Domesday as Chenet and belonged to the King. The King's Forest of Cannock became Cannock Chase which in turn became and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Cannock itself remained a small rural community until the late 19th century when it expanded with the mining industry employing 20000 miners by the early 20th century. Today there is no heavy industry and the town is popular with commuters with Cannock Chase being an important recreational area.
