Rock Ferry developed as a residential area in the 19th century after the first permanent slipway was built. Previously ferry services had been operated successfully to Liverpool and Daniel Defoe recorded his crossing in the 17th century. It soon became a fashionable area but declined in the following century when local industries closed and people migrated to area inland. Since then regeneration work has continued and new houing built.
Facilities include non-resident management and emergency alarm service.
