Prescot was a small town in the late middle ages and received its first charter for a market in the 14th century. Its name is thought to derive from 'preost' meaning a priest and 'cot' from cottage. At the turn of the 16th century Prescot had a playhouse and the Shakespearean connections remain to this day with the new Shakespeare North Playhouse hoping to open in 1922. The town became the centre of the watch making industry which then declined at the beginning of the 20th century. Precot lies about eight miles east of Liverpool.
