Maghull is situated between Ormskirk and Liverpool and historically was always a part of Lancashire. It was mentioned in Domesday as Magele and remained a small village for much of the middle ages. The opening of the Leeds and Liverpool canal in the late 18th century brought considerable benefits to local trade and the town developed further in the 19th century with the coming of the railways.
