Liverpool was once part of Lancashire and has long been settled. It was an important fishing village in the early 13th century when it received its first charter but remained a small port for most of the middle ages. The town developed through trade with the West Indies and subsequently expanded with the introduction of steamships in the mid 19th century becoming one of the richest cities in the country. In 2008 Liverpool celebrated its status as European Capitol of Culture.
