The name Hoylake derives from Hyle Lake - 'Tidal lake by the Hile' - from a hillock or sandbank. The seaside resort of Hoylake is situated on the north-western tip of the Wirral, between the Dee and Mersey estuaries, overlooking Liverpool Bay. There are wide beaches stretching northwards from the promenade behind which are several golf courses.
