Sutton was a small farming community through the Middle Ages and probably derived its name from 'south farmstead or village'. It lies between Cheam to the west and Carshalton to the east and expanded in the second half of the 19th century with the coming of the railways. By the 20th century it was already a substantial commuter town and well placed for communications in the south of England.
