Streatham is now famous for having one of the longest shopping streets in England. For many years it remained a small village and with the coming of the railways expanded with many Victorian houses. The eastern half of Streatham Common has been designated a Local Nature Reserve and the common has a tradition of hosting cricket matches. The Streatham Common Community Garden looks after part of the kitchen gardens which once formed part of The Rockery, formerly the grounds of a large house.
