Hampstead Garden Suburb is north of Hampstead and is mostly purpose-built and inspired by Henrietta Barnet who wanted a scheme in the style of one of the first 'Garden Cities' but without being self- contained though now there are more shops and facilities. The area has large open spaces and soon developed literary connections and is a fine example of successful early 20th century planning.
