Hackney is in East London and thought to derive its name from Hacasey meaning high ground in marshland and believed to be owned by Haca in the 6th century. It remained a small farming community for much of the middle ages becoming a largely urban area with the coming of the railways in the 1850's. More recently parts of Hackney Marshes were developed for the Olympic Park in 2012 and now open to the public.
