Ealing : Ealing is to the west of Acton about eight miles from central London and probably derived its name from 'Gilla's family or followers'. It remained a small village until the later half of the 19th century when new housing development turned it into a sought after area. A large grass common remains at its centre crossed by the old Oxford road. The opening of the underground stations at the turn of the century further increased its appeal to London commuters.
