Islington and Hackney in the late 19th century were largely developed as they are today with further outlying districts such as Barnet and Waltham Forest yet to be developed. Islington probably dervies its name from 'Gisla's Hill' and Hackney from 'Haca's piece of dry ground in a marsh'. Both districts were largely rural at the start of the 19th century and popular with Londoners escaping the grime of the city. In the second half of the 20th century parts of Islington 'refurbished' itself and 'Hackney' has probably left its mark in the English language as forever being associated with horses.
