Chiswick : Chiswick lies about six miles west of London and for many years in the 18th and 19th centuries was a particularly fashionable place to live. It has a long wide high street with shops, inns and restaurants. The original village is thought to have developed as a fishing enclave and this eventually declined with the growth of industry and pollution of the river. In the 19th century an important shipbuilding yard developed at Chuch Wharf later to build torpedo boats in the 2nd World War.
Chiswick House ia a magnificent neo-Palladian villa set in beautiful historic gardens which were the inspiration of the English Landscape Movement. These later influenced the design of many open spaces including New York's Central Park.
