Stockport lies on the River Mersey at the confluence of the rivers Gort and Tame. By the time of the 16th century Stockport Castle lay in ruins and by the middle of the 17th century it was agreed that it should be demolished. In the 18th century silk weaving became an important industry and the town developed further in the 19th century with the growth of cotton manufacturing.
