Leigh is situated about ten miles west of Manchester almost equidistant between the M6 and the M61. Wigan is about six miles to the northwest. It is an ancient settlement and the parish was mentioned in the 12th century. The town really grew in the late 19th century and prospered with the coming of the railways and canals. Many mills survive reflecting the importance of the cotton industry and today it is mainly a residential town.
