Find retirement developments in some of the finest towns and villages in Lancaster Street
Lancaster was the county town of Lancashire until Preston became the administrative centre in the 19th century. It is set at the mouth of the River Lune on the north-west coast and its name derives from 'Roman fort on the River Lune'. The town grew up around its Norman castle and in the Middle Ages became an important port and in the 18th century a centre of trade with America. Eventually the Lune started to silt up and with the rise of Liverpool further south its maritime trade declined.
