Carnforth is situated just off Junction 35 of the M6 about six miles north of Lancaster. Its name is thought to derive from its old ford on the River Keer and its position makes it popular with tourists wishing to explore the local countryside. For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries the towns' main employment was in the iron industry and Carforth Railway Station can be recognised in the film 'Brief Encounter'.
