Bamford was mentioned in Domesday as Banford and belonged to Ralph Fitzhubert and the name is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon 'Beamford' meaning a ford by a tree. The village developed with its corn mill subsequently becoming a cotton mill and later still was converted to steam power until being converted into flats in the 20th century. Bamford railway station is on the Hope Valley line.
