Morpeth is situated in a loop of the River Wansbeck about 13 miles north of Newcastle and stands on the old coaching route between London and Edinburgh. Morpeth Castle was built in the 14th century but only the gatehouse and parts of the ruined castle remain. The town was a major agricultural centre for the county and for many years was one of the main markets for live cattle in Northern England. There are many places of historical interest including Newminster Abbey, a 13th century chapel called The Chantry and Collingwood House, the home of one of Nelson's captains.
